last entry

ok well as you can gues from my lack of entries, italy has been more crazy than you can imagine, plus the internet here is really spotty and slow so i cant get any pictures uploaded. plus i have such a back log of stories theres no way i can update everything we have done. So heres teh deal, i managed to get a small number of pictures uploaded while here from free travel. Ill post what ive got. and summarize what we have doen since weve been in italy and what we are going to do. then youll just have to wait and talk to me in person to get the scoop on all that has been done in Italy.

Freetravel. Early on that friday morning i went by myself to Innsbruck in Austria. Its a gorgeous mountain town and i planned to go there fro a few hours before meeting the rest of the crew in Salzburg. On the train i ended up sitting next to a young austrian turk fellow who i talked to for about 2 hours in his very broken english. Apparently all christians to him are roman catholic.

Innsbruck was very pretty, but my fun was diminished by the huge pack i lugged everywhere.
then i hopped on a train for Salzburg...just happening it was the same train the rest of my group was on and i found them in their car.

Salzburg the next day we split up and i saw the huge fortress, about 4 or 6 baroque churches and various sound of music locations. Train that night to Vienna. Two days in vienna included the Stephansdome church,  st peters, two Habsburg palaces and extensive gardens and a trip to the eternal vienese fairgrounds, prator.

Night train to Prague. a new country and a new language, the train station was very very sketchy and it was midnight. hard to get money changed to czech money and Mark got hustled by a money changer who extorted him to by a map. Finally we take a subway to our hostel and me and em sleep in a random hotel because we cant meet up with her friend in time. next day we rendevous with Stepon, Emilys friend, we see the prague castle and fortress, cathedrals and the charles bridge. The second day more sight seeing and a traditional czech meal. Prague is cheap  because 22 czech dollars is one us dollar.

we then took over night train to Amsterdam. The train was very socviet republic. the conductor tried to steal our euro rail passes and we got woken up by a drunk aussie and irish guy. next 2 days in Amsterdam.

Amsterdam we meet up with Marc and sarah who left prague early for berlin and Baeda who was in spain. we see the area, they go to a heineken brewery, I see museums, open air markets and Anne Frank house.

from amsterdam we leg it to Frankfurt and fly to Corfu.
6 days in corfu we stay at the pink palace. a hostel for boozing and youth adventure. I thought the boozing was gross, but the adventure rocked. Kayaking one day, Boat tour, cliff diving and snorkeling, ATV day tour, scooters and beach relaxing. all in all fun!

then we took a long ferry ride to greece mainlaind, waited 10 hours and then took a 9 hour ferry to south italy, then 7 hours on train to Florence. ugh.

Florence. First week we tour the city and see the David. first weekend is free travel. I visit Lucca and Pisa. Lucca really cool becayuse it still has city wall. Pisa not so great but a must. Sunday i go to Cinqueterre, this is a natl park on the coast. very pretty with good hiking. Next week we visit the sante croce church and the duomo and duomo museum. Next weekend we hit up Siena. In Siena a fiasco happens and everyones feeligns are hurt over a misunderstanding and a waterballoon dropping,. in the end all ok though. Siena, quiet place but great cathedral and art.

Nexty week we have more classes, see the Sante Maria Novella church and the Brancacci chapel. walking tour of Florence with guide Simone. thursday to sunday we visit Rome

In rome i see the Roman forums twice, The colloseum, Pantheon, Unfinished tomb of julius 2 by michelangelo, vatican, Sistine chapel, St peters, tons of roman statues and art and visit with michael miller. Not enough time to do all i wanted.

back in florence now. Today we went to the Bargello and saw the david by Donatello and the famous Hermes statue. Tomorrow class, then we go to San Marco monastery. Next weekend is free travel. Im going to Naples  area to the island of Capri and the amalfi coast.

After that we see the Uffizi gallery with the Birth of Venus by Botticelli. Then weekend trip to Venice. One more week of classes and then we go home.

i know that was short and to the point but it was summary. Now a few pics.

brief post

hey everyone, im writing this from amsterdam. i wont say much now because i need sleep for another busy day. last friday i spent in innsbruck, austria - then saturday to salzburg where sound of music was filmed - then to vienna for sunday and monday - then to prague, czech republic for two amazing days tuesday and wednesday - then a long long sleeper car in an ancient train to Amsterdam on thursday today. tomorrow all day amsterdam, saturday we fly to greece, and stay there for 7 days. its an amazing trip no? i can say Vienna was sublime, Prague mysterious, Amsterdam inviting and comfy. each one of theses cities has its own charm and i could be wrapped in their stories forever. if you ever gave a damn in your life, then you should be saving currently to visit this wonderful continent.

when im in greece ill have more access to computer. there i will write a full entry on this past week and post pictures. Baeda just met up with us in amsterdam as well. he spent a good long time in madrid with a friend. ask him forhis own interesting stories. ciao!

Parisian nights...

hello everyone! This past weekend  for  free travel  i went to  no other than paris. However, before we get into that i must chronicle my experience in Strasbourg, France on Thursday. unfortunantly i forgot my camera while we were in Strasbourg so no pictures. it isnt a huge loss though. We went into its magnifcently huge cathedral and got to go in a few museums. Other than Strasbourg wasnt too much to write home about.

Friday, after a morning of German class, Myself, Emily, Baeda, Jovan, Marc, Caroline and Sarah headed out for a weekend in paris. We hopped on our train in Basel, found our reservations, and set out for a 5 hour train ride to paris. As we neared paris, we truly began to understand the enourmity of it all. The train sped on for about 30 minutes once we had entered the paris limits, and still houses after houses after bustling streets streamed by our windows. Finally we arrived at the Gare de L'est, which for all you non-Francaise, that means the Eastern Station. As we departed from our train, we were swept into the mad bustle that is a Parisian train station. Soon we were outside and walking to our hotel along a crazy street of weaving cars, Africans and Parisians. If your wondering why i say africans, we were staying near the foreign quarter in Paris, a spot that consists almost completely of african immigrants and some middle eastern immigrants. Finally we found our hotel, Le Champagne de Nord. There, after checking in, we went to our rooms. the girls had a room in the back, but Myself and a couple of the guys had a nice room over looking the street.

-Caroline poses out our window sill. in Paris, one doesnt know the meaning of "excess space"

we unpacked, got settled in and prepared for a night out on the town, with the goal of visiting the Eiffel Tower.

-Jovan and Geoff sportin' their threads. Baeda and the girls dressed up as well. Me? well you know me. I dont even own nice clothes :)

After everyone got ready, we headed to the Metro near the train station. Never in my life did i think it would be so hard to find a metro station, but search as i may i kept going in circles, with 7 people following me. Finally we found the descending stairs across the street from the station with no sign. We hopped on the metro and headed south to a large stop near the Seine river. when we emerged from the metro, however it was pouring rain. we therefore made a B-line for the closest available restaurant. It was a pretty nice italian restaurant where I got beef, some got Lamb, others duck and Geoff even got Kangarou.

-Obligatory dinner shot. The food was good. Geoff says Kangarou is super!

Once dinner was over, the rain had luckily stopped, so we headed along the Seine river toward the Eiffel tower. It was a great walk, though a bit cold, and along the way we saw the Eiffel tower sparkle, which it does every hour on the hour(more on that later), the Louvre, the Musee d'orsay, the Musee de picasso and many other impressive landmarks. Baeda, in his nice white shirt, took a tumble to due to what he says was aggressive pushing on Emily's part.

-Baeda and the results of his tumble.

-Yeah i know your jealous, but you see i cant help that. thats the Eiffel tower in the middle of the picture.

Finally we made it to the Eiffel tower.

-Emily ponders the Eiffel tower. soon it will sparkle!

-See we set off sparklers and had champagne, it was a grand time. No Baeda does not have two, he just was excited and waved it excessively.

After an hour of walking to the Eiffel tower we were pretty beat. While at the eiffel tower, there were tons of aggressive peddlers trying to sell things to people. If you engaged them at all, which emily had a tendancy to do, they would harass you to no end. Finally, after Baeda paid for a small eiffel tower, we dared him to go up to a tourist couple and attempt to sell it them in his Ms. Swan voice. He finally obliged us with much hilarity. it was great, though they refused to buy any of his fine product.
After the tower, we took a metro back to our room. See we booked two triples but we had 8 people. we planned on sneaking in the other two. The problem was that our hotel locked up at night so to get in you had to be buzzed in by their night watchman, who looked and acted much like Saddam Hussein. We nearly all got by him until he grabbed Geoff by the shoulder and asked him where he was going. After much explaining, Geoff was kicked out and not even allowed to get back to get his stuff. Luckily our window opened onto the road so we could communicate with him. Baeda and i tried to explain to the guy what was up but he was a complete Asshole. Finally baeda went with Geoff to find another hotel somewhere, and the three guys and girls left went to sleep. They eventually found a place two streets over at a cheap place in the Red Light District. It was very shady and baeda said the floor sunk in. still they got a room which was nice.

the next day we peered out our windows until they finally arrived. we thanked god they were ok and that they had found a room and then we headed to the catacombs. The catacombs of Paris were an abandoned quarry that was utilized by the government to house millions of dead bodies. The cemetaries of Paris were spreading diseases and pestilence around the city, and so the officials decided to unearth these graves and stack the bones 80 meters underground. Down in the catacombs it was quite dank, dark and wet. After walking through the quarry for a bit we suddenly stumbled upon stacks and stacks of skulls and bones. some of the skulls were displayed in patterns and crosses. They all were free standing and you could have picked one up and taken it with you if you wanted. It truly was bizarre.

-Isnt this amazing? thousands of these. Image them with flesh. ooooo.

-Us in the catacombs. Note, this is only one part of 1.6 km of bones. there all stacked that high.

-This is a sort of shrine in the catacombs. it truly is bizarre and fascinating at the same time.

From the catacombs we had a little luunch and then headed by metro to the Louvre, the premier art mueseum, pretty much anywhere.

-Near where we ate lunch they had all these animals for sale. dont see "game" very often as an option in the supermarket.

-The inside courtyard of the Louvre.

-The infamous pyramid of the Louvre.
inside the Louvre i wandered around and saw a bunch of amazing paintings and sculptures including the Mona Lisa, the Venus de Milo, and my personal favorite by David Jacques, the Intervention of the Sabine women, which documents the early battle between the romans and the sabines in which the sabine women stop the battle.

-The Intervention of the Sabine women. This painting is based on history im reading now, so its very interesting to me. its also like 15 feet long and 12 high, so its big.

-Venus de milo. This was found on the greek island, Milo and is dated to about 153B.C.
thats OLD.

-These are two Horsemen unearthed in Turkey near the Biblical city of Ninevah. they are really freaking old and were part of an ancient palace.

From the Louvre we walked up the Champs Elysees, Paris' most famous and premier street, up to the Arc de Triumphe. along the way we walked through a garden and past the Place de concorde, where an obelisk that paris stole from Egypt stands. Place de Concorde is where most of the French revolution beheadings occured.

-This is near the Louvre at the entrance to what had once been the royal gardens.

-This is the obelisk France appropriated. it still looks nice, so i guess ill forgive the french.

-This is a view from place de concorde of the Eiffel tower and sunset. i dont think i need to say anything more.

Walking up the Champs is quite the experience, its the main drag of Paris, always packed with cars and people. on both sides of the street are shops at the top of fashion, both in style and price. Apparently this weekend was a "white night" in Paris we found, which means all the mueseums were open all night, and many stores as well. it was why there were so many people around and a heavy cop prescence. we stopped and got italian food, and then headed to the Arc de triumphe. The Arc was built by Napoleon to commemorate his army. Since then it has been added onto for soldiers in other wars, including WWI and WWII. Around the Arc is the the largest roundabout in the world, nearly 12 lanes insane traffic bobbing and weaving with no rhyme or reason.

-Emily and the Arc de Triumphe. to get to it you went underground. though some people cross that insanity of traffic.

From the Arc the girls decided to go find some wine. It took them nearly an hour to find some and they opened it in celebration of Paris. Unfortunantly soon after opening it, The police made us pour it out. apparently on the Champs open alcohol isnt allowed. something to do with preserving their image.

that night again two of members slept in a cheap motel.

Saturday we woke up, grabbed some food at a cafe and headed to Notre Dame. It was sunday so Mass was in session and yet we could still visit. The place was full of tourists, but also the smell of incense and the chanting of the priest. it was quite beautiful and moving.

-Thats Notre Dame. Quite impressive and exciting to visit.

-This is the main knave of Notre dame. The priest did his thing in the middle by that altar.

-This is just a sample of the double tiered arches of Notre dame.

-This is a view of the front doors and the enourmous organ above.

-Us staring up at Notre Dame.

After Notre Dame, Emily, Sarah, Baeda, Caroline and Geoff deicded they wanted to sit at a cafe, something they like to do alot. Myself, Marc and Jovan are more doers than sitters, so we decided we would check out St. Chappelle and The Basilque de Sacre Coeur, both famous french cathedrals.

First St. Chappelle. This cathedral is right near notre dame and is built into the same complex as the first palace of the french kings. It was built to hold the relics of the cross.

-This is the inside of St. Chappelle. The altar which held the relics was in the front by the pointed arch. this place was amazing in the size of its chappelle and the number of windows.

-This is a more close up of the windows. Each window is a different chapter of the bible. each pane is a bible story.

From the Ile de France, where Notre dame and St. Chappelle were, we headed north to the Sacre Coeur. The Sacre Coeur is a all white church built one of paris' only hills. therefore from it you can see an impressive view of Paris.

-This a view of Sacre Coeur from the bottom of the hill.

-This is outside the Sacre Coeur. there was a festival of sorts occurring, which explains the packed crowds.

-A view from the steps of the Sacre Coeur.

-The inside dome of the Sacre Coeur. It was very impressive and airy.

-This is another view of the Knave. Their was a huge picture of Jesus and his heart was highlighted.

While in the sacre coeur we decided to stay for mass and we heard the nuns sing. it was quite beautiful and relaxing.

Also yesterday, i went back up to my favorite spot in the hills above beninburg. Here is a view from the cliffs from my spot of the castle below and the towns beyond.

-This is the view from my special spot. that ruins in the middle right is the castle you pass on the way up. we are as high up as the cliffs on the left.

Tuesday was Tamra's Birthday. For it we sang and, just coincidentally, we had a huge fondue and games party, where the Bienenburg staff fed us fondue, then they sang some yodeling and some of us EMU students performed skits. Fianlly we played a swiss chocolate game kind of like hot potato. Afterwards we went and had a smore roasting over a fire. I think tamra enjoyed her birthday.

finally two videos. the first is of the Eiffel tower and its sparkle show. The second is a film of the traffic around the Arc de Triumphe to give you an idea of its insanity.
-Pretty aint it?

-I told you it was insane. Imagine a billion almost accidents every minute and youll be on your way to imaging this roundabout.

anyway thats all for now. This friday we leave on free travel. I will be going to Innsbruck, Salzburg, Vienna, Prague, Amsterdam, and the greek island of Corfu over a two week period. Whoo!!

4 weekends in one.

I know its been quite awhile since my last post. Mainly this is because we were out of town all weekend from thursday  until monday. Then, as you can imagine, when we got back and there were two computers for 23 people it got pretty competitive and crazy to get on here. so ive been having to do this  a little at a time to get a full post.

Last wednesday after class, a group of us decided to head to Freiburg, Germany. Its only about 45 minutes away from here, and because its Germany and they use Euros instead of Francs, the prices are all cut in half. Freiburg is a pretty cool city with lots of people and shopping. We all split up and spent some time window shopping. I myself headed to the very large cathedral in the center of the old part of town

-Please kindly pretend like their are not construction scaffolding all over this beautiful structure.

-The crew in Freiburg. Notice the little aquaduct? theyre on every street in Freiburg and the water was quite clean. Im not sure their effect, but they were sure cool.

After shopping we all met up at La pizzeria, a charming little pizza place that some folks had discovered while in Freiburg a few weeks before. The pizza was good and quite cheap, only 3.50 euro a pizza, which is cheaper than most american places. we stayed and enjoyed ourselves most of the night.

-Sarah chows down on some cheap pizza, while marc chillaxes. The beer here was half a liter for 3 euros. and it was tasty German beer!

Thursday, early morning we headed out for our great four day excursion. During the trip we were planning to go to Interlaken, Montreux and lake Geneva, and finally Lucerne. The first day we headed out of Liestal to Interlaken. Along the way we were planning to stop in a small town on the Thuner See to visit some of Rob's relatives who supposedly own a bakery in the town.

-Any of my regular readers will recognize these mountains from a previous post. Here we are again at the Thuner See near Interlaken.

While there in the town, however, we had trouble finding the bakery. Eventually we found that it had been sold in the past ten years to another person. Apparently the Steurys are no longer bakers in Switzerland.

-Poor Mel. He's so confused. Where oh where has is bakery gone?

After our futile Bakery escapade, we retired to the shoreline for a nice lunch in the sun. While we were all taking pictures and enjoying ourselves, our friend Geoff is suddenly in his boxers running towards the water and hits it with a big splash!

-Jess and Kyle on the docks with the town, Lausingen in the background. Beautiful background no?

-Our group on the docks.

-Geoff Jumps, Now in Video!

From the Thuner See we went on to Interlaken. We had some time before dinner, so some of us went up into the alps. the more expensive group hit up Jungfraujoch, the tallest point in Europe, because it was a clear day. The rest of us more budget minded people went to Gimmelwald. Now i knnow what your saying, ive already been there. yeah, but i wanted to show it to the others and it had just snowed on the top peaks so it was much more beautiful.

-Those who went with me: Laura, Marc, Rachael, Sarah, Caroline and Tyler. Beautiful aint it?

-Conrad and the Alps yo.

-One of the fountains in the alp. Glacier water anyone?

-There was a woman in Gimmelwald selling Cheese and Smoked Sausage out of her home. Caroline Marc and I took her up on the offer. Here she is cutting carolines cheese. It was. So. Good.

-Marc befriend this sheep. Arnt they a cute couple?

Up on Jungfraujoch(Which by the way means young virgin in German), Baeda, Scott, Jessica, Marsha, Jovan, and Geoff were having the time of their lives. They went in a tram straight into the mountain and then took an elevator to the top. They explored an ice palace and viewed the top of the world. Baeda told me to let you all know that: "It was really cold and you couldnt breathe because the air was really thin." thats all i could get out of him. Still it looked pretty cool.

-The gang standing on top of Europe. I never knew the Alps had their own Gangsigns.

Later that night, back in Interlaken, we enjoyed a meal cooked by Emily and slept in a nice hostel.

-Interlaken at dusk.

The next day we took a train to Montreux. Montreux is in the French speaking part of Switzerland on the west side, on the coast of Lake Geneva. Interlaken is in central Switzerland, so we had a bit of a ways to go. And we ended up taking a scenic train through a gorgeous valley for 4 hours. Most of which we had our heads hanging out the windows, dog style. it was an amazing bit of fun.

-Baeda says Choo Choo!!!!

-View out the window of the train. if the camera were pointed at me youd see my tongue hanging out of my mouth.

-Kyle wasnt impressed by the view. he instead sampled the local Zzzzz's

-Short movie out the train window.

As we left the valley, we came out with an amazing view of the city of Montreux, Lake Geneva, and the alps. it was truly to spectacular for pictures. but well its a photo blog, so well, here is the pic :P

-Montreux and Lake Geneva.

In Montreux, most people headed to the coast. Kyle, Tyler and myself, however, headed for the most visited castle in Switzerland, a very well kept up castle, Chateau Chillon.

-Chillon as you can see was built out on the water. Originally the site of a roman fort, this castle was built in the 11th century, and built onto up until the 17th.

-The entrance to Chillon, photo taken from the drawbridge.

-View from one of the turrets.

-One of 4 courtyards.

Chillon's Dungeon is particularly famous because Lord Byron wrote of St. Bonivard who was imprisoned in it for 5 years for speaking for Swiss independence.

-First, a painting of Bonivard in his prison.

-The current dungeon as seen by my eyes.

-Kyle and Tyler examine the chains.

Before the castle was built on Chillon, there was a Carolingian Abbey. The remains of it are still under the castle and we ventured down into them.

-The altar of the old abbey is gated off. here we are under the castle.

afterwards we headed up into the nearly 30 rooms of the castle, including feasting halls, bedchambers, studies and chapels.

-One of two large feasting halls.

-View from the Feasting hall window. thats about 40 feet down.

-Feasting hall fireplace. You know for the cold windows and large stews.

-Kyle seems to say "thats a whole lot of pointy objects!"

-In the halls were walls lined with family crests. Each crest is from one Baron who ruled in Chateau Chillon.

-Conrad in the King's bathroom. Below me was a 40 foot drop to water. Talk about a cool draft on the hiney!

-makes you really sympathize with the cannon fodder.

-A sailboat on Lake Geneva

After Chateau Chillon, we joined the rest of the group in a small alpine town, Laysin. We had to take a cog train up to it. a cog train is basically a normal train car but it operates on interlocked gears so it can climb at a steeper grade. in Laysin we stayed at a hotel/do it yourself house. Basically we had the place to ourselves. We ate fondue at night, and later went out to sample the local brew. The Schneiderweiss was an especially tasty local beer.

-All of us at a "saloon" though it was the farthest from anything even remotely western.

The next morning, while cooking breakfeast, the cookers set off the Fire alarm. We couldnt find where to turn it off in time, and so the fire department and owner came rushing in. Apparently if the alarm goes off its a 800fr fine, which is expensive. the little fiery owner of this place didnt speak any english, so baeda nad sarah, our two best french speakers had to try to translate and talk to her. after much argueing and yelling on her part, she agreed toa 200 fr fine and we left asap. it was quite interesting. on the phone to the tourist office, baeda over heard her say that this group lets their "les infants" speak for them.

-Baeda and Mel argue with angry french lady.

The view from Laysin was gorgeous though and i caught a shot in the morning of some snow capped peaks.

-Its actually like 8am here, but the mountains keep the sun down for a good bit.

We then hopped on a train that took us to Luzern, back up by Interlaken. When we got there the weather was nice, so we headed up mount Pilatus. Mount Pilatus is a famous local mountain. The legend states that Pontius Pilate was buried on it and whenever anyone disturbed the mountain, angry storms would rock Lake Lucern. It became so supersticious that local officials banned anyone from climbing the mountain. It wasnt until Conrad Grebel and some friends scaled the peak that the legends were officially dispeled. Ill also mention that this mount had alot of legends of dragons, and it did indeed have some very dragonesque looking caves. onto pictures!

-We took the easy way up unlike Conrad Grebel and took the cable cars. If only Grebel had had 40fr, he wouldnt have had to climb.

-View from the second cable car up to the peak. It got really steep here. some in our group werent so excited about all the heights.

-at the top, this was the winding stairs up to the highest point.

-View from the top of Lake Lucern. Amazing aint it? we were up HIGH

-Some of the fellas on top of Pilatus. This the male part of the crew going on Free travel with me to Greece.

-Doesnt it look like marc could just fall off? Lucern in the background.

-Little Chapel on the side of the mountain. those are benches to the left. Im guessing for marraiges and such.

-A view of one of the Dragon Caves.

-Sarah and Marc and I walking back from the other peak. The peak on the top right is where the other vista shots were taken. the dragon caves are in the mountain below us.

That night we dropped our stuff at our hostel and went out on the town. They have a very cool covered bridge in the old part of town. Then on sunday we walked around as well.

-Covered bridge by night

-Covered bridge by day.

-Some cool building artwork

-A cool shot of a Lucern street.

-Inside Lucern and Switzerland's oldest Renaissance church.

-This is the weeping lion. It was a memorial built in the 17th century to comisserate a great Swiss Defeat.

Sunday afternoon we headed back to Bienenburg. On monday, after morning classes, we had a work day. For some of us that meant cleaning the rooms and changing sheets. For Baeda and a few others it meant yard work.

-Baeda can get his mow on even in Europe. This reminds me too much of my summer.

That night me and Tamra went to Freiburg. I needed her fashion expertise to help me pick out a snazzy new pair of shoes for a nice German cheap price.

Tuesday after class we went to the Basel zoo. it was rainy horribly however, so we didnt spend to much time there. but we did get to see very cool monkeys(one was playing games with tamra through the glass) and a cool aquarium. Here are the penguins.

-Awwwww

and a fish

-Other than the flash, its a very cool shot of a neat fish.

Today, weds, we spent in class all day. I jogged up to the castle close to bienenburg and past it up into the cliff.s it was about a 3 mile run or so, straight up hill and kicked by butt, but i was very proud that i did it and i felt good afterwards. tomorrow were going into France to Strausbourg. this weekend we have free travel. For me that means Paris!!!!! ciao!
